Checklists are knowledge translation tools designed to promote completeness, consistency and efficiency when performing tasks. Regarding Emergency Medicine, checklists may play a role in:
Resuscitation of Priority One Patients
The Emergency Manual is currently under development. The latest version can be reached through the link below. Please note that the Emergency Manual has not yet been studied in a clinical context and that Emergency Manuals need to be adapted to the local environment and introduced to personnel before being implemented in clinical practice.
We are preparing to perform a systematic evaluation of the clinical use of an emergency manual—a collection of crisis checklists—during team management of priority one patients in the resuscitation room of Lund’s Emergency Department.
We carried out a multicenter, in-situ study of crisis checklists in four Emergency Departments in Southern Sweden. The study showed that access to checklists increased the percentage of indicated interventions performed during the first 15 minutes from 39% to 86%.
Procedure Training In-Situ
Procedures are best trained in-situ. Below some of the checklists used for in-situ procedure training in our department.
Gamification refers to the use of elements from games in non-game contexts to increase motivation, engagement, learning, or participation. We suggest that medical personnel practice the procedures in pairs, time each other and record the times in a Google Sheet using QR-codes.
