Our regional training program in EM consists of a cycle of 20 half-day sessions:

01-ORGANIZATION & COMMUNICATION

  • Leadership, organization and communication in the Emergency Department and in the prehospital arena, during normal circumstances and in the setting of major events

02-CARDIAC ARREST & ARRHYTHMIAS

  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation for all age groups

  • Management of tachy- & bradyarrhythmias

03-AIRWAY & PROCEDURAL SEDATION

  • Basic and advanced airway management for all age groups

  • Procedural sedation

04-BREATHING

  • Investigation and treatment of patients with dyspnea

05-SHOCK & CHEST PAIN

  • Recognition and management of patients with shock

  • Investigation and treatment of patients with chest pain

06-ALTERED CONSCIOUSNESS & HEADACHE

  • Investigation and treatment of patients with altered consciousness, including temporary loss of consciousness (syncope, seizure)

  • Investigation and treatment of patients with headache

07-NEUROLOGICAL DEFICITS & OPHTHALMOLOGY

  • Investigation & management of patients with neurological deficits

  • Lumbar puncture

  • Ophthalmology in the Emergency Department

08-EXPOSURE & ABNORMAL BLOOD TEST RESULTS

  • Dermatology, management of burns, hyper- and hypothermia

  • Hypo- and hypernatremia, -kalemia, renal failure, abnormal liver function tests, anemia, thrombocytopenia, febrile neutropenia

09-TRAUMA & ABDOMINAL PAIN

  • Management of trauma patients

  • Investigation & management of patients with abdominal or testicular pain

10-IV/IO ACCESS, DRAINS & WOUNDS

  • Chest tube, intraosseous needle, generic Seldinger technique, wound assessment, suturing, suprapubic catheterization

11-UPPER EXTREMITY

  • Investigation & management of patients with shoulder, elbow and wrist pain

  • Joint examination, arthrocentesis, reduction. Management of upper extremity fractures

12-LOWER EXTREMITY, PELVIS & BACK

  • Investigation & management of patients with back, hip, thigh, knee, calf and foot pain

  • Pelvic girdle, femur traction, spinal immobilization, arthrocentesis

  • Management of lower extremity fractures

13-INTOXICATION

  • Investigation and management of patients with suspected intoxication

  • Recognition and treatment of toxidromes

14-PEDIATRICS

  • Resuscitation of critically ill children

  • Investigation and treatment of children with fever, rash, diarrhea, fatigue, breathing problems etc.

15-PREGNANCY, DELIVERY & NEONATAL RESUSCITATION

  • Investigation and treatment of pregnant women with vaginal bleeding, breathing problems, chest or abdominal pain

  • Delivery: normal, shoulder dystocia, breech

  • Neonatal resuscitation

16-PSYCHIATRY, MEDICOLEGAL & PHARMACOLOGY

  • Mental Status Examination, management of patients with depression & psychosis

  • Medicolegal: LPT, LVM etc.

  • Drug interactions, safe medication practises

17-EKG & ACID-BASE DISTURBANCES

  • Systematic EKG and blood gas interpretation

  • Differential diagnosis of abnormal EKG components, metabolic or respiratory disorders

18-ULTRASOUND

  • Basic knowledge and skills of point-of-care ultrasound focusing on examination of the heart, inferior vena cava, perihepatic/perisplenic & suprapubic areas, abdominal aorta, apical pleura, lung and lower extremity DVT examination

19-RADIOLOGY

  • Choice of imaging, adverse events (e.g. contrast nephropathy, radiation injury)

  • Basic image interpretation: chest X-ray, head CT, spine, extremities

20-DIAGNOSIS, DECISION-MAKING & MENTORING

  • Bayes theorem and likelihood ratios, dual process theory, medical decision-making, ethics, mentoring
